Walker’s Birth Story (+Lots of Pictures!)

WARNING – If you don’t like reading about the state of a woman’s cervix, amniotic fluid, pushing urges, etc., then do not read this story.  Obviously a birth story will contain these things!

Walker’s Birth Story

This story actually begins in mid-July, when I was 35 weeks. The day that I hit 35 weeks, I was sitting in bed thinking, “this is it.” I had been up all night long timing contractions. They were about 4-5 minutes apart, very painful, and had been happening for about 8 hours. I had already woken Judd up and told him that I thought we should call our doctor. As I mention in all of my birth stories, my doctor happens to be a family friend – and treats me like royalty! We called him, and he said he would come out to the house shortly and let me know what to do so we didn’t have to go to the hospital just to be sent home.

I had been extremely paranoid my entire pregnancy that I wouldn’t carry Walker long enough and he would be born too early. I delivered Amelia at 35 weeks on the dot – and luckily, she was healthy. I started requesting checks for changes earlier than typically performed so that if something could be caught, we might could catch it and stop it. I consistently showed no problems, and that was reassuring. At my last appointment at 34 weeks, I was a fingertip dilated and no effacement to speak of. I wasn’t worried with that.

When my doctor got to my house that morning, I was 2cm, and again no effacement worth mentioning. He said that most likely, this wasn’t it. I was exhausted. How on earth could contractions be that painful and go on that long without being real? I had experienced prodromal labor with my other two pregnancies as well, but I had never felt contractions that painful and that close together that weren’t real. I say that is the beginning of my story because this exact same thing continued to happen for 3 full weeks…filled with many “is this it?” moments where I constantly wondered what was going on. It was incredibly frustrating and such an emotional roller coaster. Besides being painful to constantly contract for 3 weeks, it also made me incredibly anxious that I wouldn’t know when I was in labor and would be sitting at home about to birth a baby and have no idea. By the time I got to 37 weeks (full term) I was

F-I-N-I-S-H-E-D.

I prayed constantly that if he was healthy, to please let him come! I was proud to hit full term, but I was so incredibly tired. Sleep was already a thing of the past because of the constant contractions at night. One night they were 2-3 minutes apart and didn’t change with rest or movement and were extremely painful. About the time I called Judd, they stopped. Not tapered off…just stopped. I actually cried that night because I was so tired of the false alarms.

The REAL story (and labor!) begin on August 7. I had been riding with Judd on the combine that day cutting rice. I told him to hit a few bumps… ;) Unfortunately for me, these fancy new combines ride so smoothly that you’d never know. I came home and fed the girls dinner. I had been having a few contractions that day, but nothing more than normal. I didn’t even bother timing them. There was no point. I had a doctor’s appointment the next day, and I was ready to see if there had been any progress at all from all the contractions I’d been having. At my 37 week appointment, I was 3cm, 50%. The baby felt REALLY low in my pelvis. I had trouble walking very far because it felt like a very intense pressure in my pelvis. I put the girls in bed and settled in on the couch. I decided that I might not have time the next day, so I went ahead and wrote out my 38 week post for my blog. I saved it, and minimized it on my computer until Judd could come home and take my picture. I started watching TV and Judd came home. I still felt normal – a contraction here and there but it was nearly painless. Judd ate dinner and sat down beside me and we started watching “World’s Dumbest Criminals” and nearly died laughing. All of a sudden, I felt a tiny gush. It felt exactly like what happened when my water broke with Caroline. Instead of instantly thinking that I had peed on myself, I got up and changed my liner and waited. If it was really my water breaking, it would happen again. I sat back down on the couch and less than a minute later, I felt it again. So I repeated the above steps – still wondering if it was really possible! After a few more times of that, I told Judd we needed to clean the house up (HA!) and get ready. I was pretty sure my water had broken. Judd sent my doctor a message that I feel necessary to write down because it’s just totally something he’d say. “It seems my wife has sprung a leak.” My doctor called shortly after that and told me if I really thought it had broken, to go to the hospital. We live 25 minutes from the hospital so I decided to do my makeup and my hair and if I was still feeling the leaking, we would go.

Judd called his mom and told her to come on down to the house to stay with the girls. I did my hair and makeup and actually got somewhat frustrated because while I was standing up I hadn’t felt anything. Once I sat down again, there was NO doubt anymore! We loaded up the car and called my parents and sister. Off we went! I was so excited. I was also SO thankful that this labor began with my water breaking…something that I couldn’t second guess myself with for too long! My fears of sitting at home for too long wondering if I was in labor were over!

We got to the hospital and Judd took my 38 week picture since it was after midnight, now August 8th. We walked in and got admitted and went up to the room. I got into my gown, still not having any contractions that hurt or felt close together. My nurse checked me to see where I was. She said, “You’re about 7cm.” and my mouth fell open. I couldn’t believe I was 7cm and hadn’t had a single painful contraction. Impossible! My second thought was that my family wouldn’t make it again! Amelia had come in such a whirlwind that no one made it in time. I sent them a message and told them the news. I think it was around that time that my mother took over my sister’s driving and they got there a bit faster. ;) Since I wasn’t really contracting regularly yet, we decided to just hang out for a while and see if anything would happen on its own. My family arrived around 2:30am (they made it!) and Judd was asleep on the couch. I hadn’t been able to sleep at all – I was just too anxious! We all sat around and talked a little, then everyone tried to catch a nap here and there. I finally slept for about 30 minutes.

Around 6:30 or 7:00am, my doctor arrived and checked me. I was still at 7cm. He ordered Pitocin, and I ordered the epidural! My CNA came in and started the process of my epidural – which I promise you must have taken 45 minutes. (It probably didn’t take quite that long, but it was the longest process of an epidural EVER. My other two seemed so quick compared to this one.) Once I got the epidural, they started the Pitocin and we waited a few minutes. It didn’t take long for my contractions to pick up and get painful. I say painful because I could still feel pain in my left hip that radiated down my thigh. OUCH. I gripped the bed and tried my hardest to just deal with it, but it was excruciating. I was afraid the CNA would want to completely redo my epidural so I kept putting off asking him to fix it. Finally, I caved and decided I couldn’t take it anymore. I was almost in tears from my hip feeling like someone had taken a jack hammer to it. He came in and explained I had a “hot spot” and topped off my epidural and had me roll over onto my left hip. Thankfully, that finally seemed to help and the pain just turned into intense pressure.

About 3 minutes after he came in, I felt the most intense pressure I’ve ever felt in my life to push. I never felt it with the girls except maybe a “I think I might need to push” type feeling. This was a “GO GET SOMEONE – I CAN’T STOP PUSHING!” type feeling. Ha! I told my mom, Judd, & Audra who were all in the room that I needed to push…now. I can’t even remember who went and got the nurse but she came in and told me I was complete. She had me push two times then told me to stop and not push anymore. That was a difficult task. It felt like even if I wasn’t pushing, he was still moving down (although I don’t think that was really the case, it was just pressure). She called my doctor who had gone over to the clinic. He got there much faster than I anticipated and I was so glad when he walked in. A little bit of anxiety set in at this point because I was just so nervous for the pushing part!

IMG_9051

They had me start pushing and at first it felt like my pushes weren’t doing anything. Judd says every time I pushed you could see his head and then when I stopped it would disappear. After one or two pushes, I finally got the hang of it and I was pushing with all of my might. I could feel a lot more with this epidural than my previous ones – but it wasn’t terrible. After what felt like 10 minutes, but according to everyone else was only about 3 minutes, Walker was born! When I looked at him I thought he looked about the same size as the girls (both were 6 ½ lbs) but it turns out he was 8lbs! I was so relieved that the waiting was over. He did great and was screaming in no time! I needed 1 stitch, which is nothing! Everything went great and soon after they let the family come in to see us and that was a special moment for me. With the girls, the policy was that Judd could go show off the baby while I recuperated, but it apparently changed and I got to be a part of that moment. It made a world of difference! After the family left, Walker nursed for the first time and ate like a CHAMP. By far, he is the best nurser, right off the bat. He has continued to nurse really well! At 6 days postpartum he started sleeping 3 hour stretches at night – which I appreciate. It’s different with him than both the girls since he isn’t jaundiced and is already back at his birth weight. Since he’s not jaundiced, he wakes himself up to eat when he’s hungry – which the girls didn’t do. I can actually let him lead the eating and it is SUCH a different experience being able to let him lead it. I’m so thankful he didn’t have jaundice issues like the girls. I specifically prayed for that and my prayers were answered! What a blessing!

This pregnancy and postpartum recovery have been difficult for my body. Without a doubt, the most challenging, physically speaking. I think my body is trying to tell me that I’m no Michelle Duggar and I need to slow it down. I’ve gotten the message loud and clear! However, I wouldn’t change a thing. He fits perfectly into our family and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Walker was born on August 8, 2012!
He weighed 7lbs 15.9oz (so, basically 8lbs) and was 19.5in long.
A birth story is soon to follow!

38 Weeks–and a birth!

This post was written the night my water broke!  I wrote this post out and all it needed was a picture for the bottom.  My water broke just 2 short hours after this post was written, but I can’t bring myself not to post it.  Smile  A birth story will be soon to follow!

My longest pregnancy, ever!  Honestly, we’re all sitting here thinking that I might actually hit my due date.  HA!

How far along: 38 weeks!

How big is baby: The average is 7lbs!

Weight gain/loss: +30lbs according to my doctor’s scale today.

Stretch marks: Just the ones on my bellybutton + my old ones showing back up.

Maternity clothes:  Can’t wait to not have maternity clothes on!  Judd and I are starting a diet after Walker gets here.  I’m pretty excited about it!

Sleep: It actually hasn’t been terrible the last few days.  I’m peeing 3-4x a night but I can usually fall back asleep pretty quickly!

Food cravings or aversions:  Ice.  I eat several cups of ice a day.  I’m probably going to break my teeth!  I’ve been craving sweets again lately.  I’ve kinda stopped caring what I’m eating or how much I’m eating.  It’s almost like I’ve reached this point where my brain says, “you’re gonna have to work that weight off anyway – go ahead and eat that 6th cookie…”

Gender: BOY!

Movement:  Lots of hiccups and kicks.  Not a lot of punches anymore.  He feels REALLY, REALLY low.  As in, “Is he gonna fall out?” type low.  That’s just my personal feeling toward it – I haven’t actually asked how low he is.  Ha!

Belly button: What’s that?

What I'm loving:  As tired as I am of being pregnant, it’s still cool that I’ve reached 38 weeks!  I’ve never made it to that number before and I feel a small bit of pride.  Ha!

What I miss: My clothes.  I’ve been looking at my clothes from this time last year when I was starting to lose weight.  I miss my clothes.

What's different this time:  The fact that I’m still pregnant!  Ha!

What I’m looking forward to:  Besides just meeting my sweet baby, I am honestly looking forward to not having pelvic pain.  It has gotten horrendous in the last few days.  I remember with both girls that it went away pretty quickly after they were born.  Like, a few days and it was gone.  I’m honestly excited about that!  I am really, really, really excited to see my baby though.  I can’t wait to see his features – see who he looks like.  That sweet new baby smell and feel.  Feeding him and snuggling him.  I dread the sleep (or lack thereof) part, but we will make it through it.  I just can’t wait to see him!

Amelia's Birth Story - 1 Year Late!

WARNING:  This is long!  If you aren't family, you probably won't care about the majority of any of this.  Even if you are family, you still may not care to read any of this...but in case you do - here it is!  This TOTALLY doesn't seem  like a year ago!  It was a CRAZY day that *could* have ended in a very different way.  :)  Enjoy...or don't...

It really all started on Monday, December 13, 2010.  I had been having some fairly mild contractions but I was a little worried because they occasionally felt like “real” ones.  Monday marked 35 weeks and I really wanted to hold her in just a little longer!  My first appointment to have my cervix checked was on Wednesday the 15th but Judd and I were planning on going to visit family out of town.  I called my doctor to see if he could squeeze me in (just to make sure we could travel safely) that afternoon and he said that was fine.  I need to point out here that I have the most awesome doctor, ever.  He’s a close family friend and I couldn’t be comfortable in his care.
So off to town we went to go to the doctor and then run some errands.  I checked in and got in my little big gown and waited.  My sweet nurse first said, “Ya know you technically don’t have to get checked this time.  You can wait until next time if you want.” And I told her, “I just want to make sure we can travel safely so I’m okay with being checked.”  When the doctor came in I told him that I just wanted to make sure that everything was okay before I left since my labor and delivery with Caroline was rather quick and at 35 weeks with her, I was already 3cm, 50%.  I was being checked when I saw him glance at the nurse with “something’s up” eyes.  Then he asked me, “Have you been having a lot of pains?”  I wasn’t really sure how to answer because I had had some contractions, but nothing regular or unbearable or anything.  “I’m not sure…I’ve had some, but not a lot. Why?” to which he replied, “No reason…” which was clearly to keep me from panicking. Ha!
When it was over, he had this look on his face like he was trying to decide whether or not I could go out of town.  I got a little nervous waiting to hear what he was going to say.  He’s the most laid back doctor ever, and if he said I couldn’t go…that definitely meant something was up.  He was writing in my chart and not saying anything to me yet (this lasted about 5 seconds but felt like 5 years) so I said, “What am I?  3cm? 4cm? 2cm?”  And his reply was, “Oh you’re definitely 3cm. (He said this with a voice almost indicating that I might be more than 3cm..)  I don’t normally tell people that they can’t go out of town if they feel up to it, but you REALLY don’t need to go on this trip.”  So after talking a few minutes he assured me everything was fine but since my labor with Caroline lasted 5 hours from start to finish, it wouldn’t be wise to make a 2 hour trip away from home.  I was 3cm, 50%, -2 station.  I knew it felt like she was low...sometimes it felt like she was pushing on my pelvic bones!
I went out and told Judd the news.  He was so shocked.  We both just knew that I would end up going to 41 weeks this time….just because I was spoiled with delivering Caroline at 37 weeks.  That was still possible!  Women walk around dilated for weeks before they have their babies!  But for some reason, I could tell my doctor didn’t think that was going to be the case with me.
We went to Walmart and bought groceries and let me just tell you…don’t go grocery shopping after getting checked when you’re fairly dilated and effaced.  Seriously.  I was cramping and totally uncomfortable.  I finally couldn’t stand it anymore so Judd finished checking out and I took Caroline and myself to the car.  When we got home I took a warm bath trying to get the cramps to stop.  Well, these cramps/contractions basically went on for 2 days.  All day Tuesday I stayed in the bed and the bathtub, hurting.  I kept telling myself that when it got unbearable or the contractions got regular or closer together, I’d call the doctor.  That never happened.  I think I took 5 baths that day because they made the pain feel better.  Thankfully, Judd took care of Caroline for me.  That night, I wanted to put her to bed.  I had an itching feeling that that might be my last night to have her as my only child.  She put her head on my shoulder and I stood there for longer than usual trying to soak it all in.  (As a sidenote, when I came out, I told Judd that I wanted him to throw his clothes in a bag just in case this was it.  Did he do that?  Of course not.  Such a man.)
I had contractions all night long, but nothing was ever regular.  I timed them over and over and they were all over the place.  I’d have 8min, 5min, 10min, 6min, 12min, and so on.  They were definitely hurting, but nothing I couldn’t tolerate or made me cry out in pain.  I got up around 3:30am and got in the bathtub and ended up falling asleep in there for almost 45 minutes.  I woke up with more pains, and more uncomfortable.  Well Judd was planning on going duck hunting with my doctor (I told you he’s a family friend!) that morning at 5:45am.  I told Judd that after their duck hunt, maybe my doctor could run by and check me.  Judd said that was fine and he would tell him for me.  Around 4:45am my contractions started hurting a little more and I was feeling some contractions in my back.  A few minutes later after another painful contraction, I started grabbing my back (back labor!) and had tears in my eyes.  Judd said, “Are you sure you don’t want him to come by first?”  and I said, “Maybe so.  Yeah, let’s get him to come now.” (In hindsight, I’m SO glad that I changed my mind!) So Judd called him and asked him to stop by and he said that was fine.
When he got there, Judd was getting ready to go hunting and my doctor was decked out in his camo.  When he came in, I told him – “If this isn’t it, y’all are going to have to sedate me for the next 2 weeks because I’m exhausted and can’t take any more.”  I had been contracting for 3 days and hadn’t slept a total of 7 hours.  I was SO TIRED.  That was an exhaustion I had never known.  He checked me, then the words I’ll never forget came out of his mouth.  “Yeah, you’re about 8cm…”  to which I said, “That’s not funny.”  I thought he was joking and was going to say, “Just kidding – you’re the same…just tough it out.”  But no…he said, “I’m not joking – you’re 8cm! Get up and get dressed and let’s go to the hospital! You’re having a baby today!”  I started crying out of sheer fear that Amelia wouldn’t be able to breathe on her own (she was only 35wks).  He assured me everything was going to be fine…but that I REALLY needed to get up and come on!  Judd was in the hallway when my doctor walked out and I heard my doc say, “We gotta go to the hospital!” and Judd’s surprised expression when he said, “REALLY?”  So of course he comes in the room throwing stuff in a bag and I’m putting my last minute things in my bag.  I stopped by the edge of the bed with a contraction and my doctor was standing in the doorway watching me like a hawk.  He said, “You okay?” and I said, “I hope so.”   We got my mother in law to come stay with Caroline (thank goodness she only lives a mile away!) and we got in the car.  Best part – Judd looked at my doctor and said, “Sooo…are you gonna go hunting or come straight to the hospital?”  We still laugh about that one!  “Yeah Judd, I’m gonna go see if I can get my limit in, then I’ll be up there!”  Ha!
On the way to the hospital, Judd looked over at me and said, “Happy Anniversary!” with a huge smile on his face.  Then it hit me that it was our 3 year anniversary and was soon to be our daughter’s birthday!  That was a special moment!  If we’re being honest, I was terrified I was going to have her in the car.  I just knew Judd needed to be putting on flashers and running red lights – however, he felt like he needed to wait for each light to turn green.  I may or may not have yelled at him.
When we got to the hospital, they were waiting on me at the front door.  My nurse said, “Girl you were trying to wait it out weren’t you?” and I said, “I really wasn’t!  I honestly didn’t know I was in labor!” And in all honesty, I would’ve gone in a lot sooner and gotten that epidural had I known!
Judd parked the car while I went up and got situated in the room.  I was waiting on my epidural.  I can handle the contractions, obviously, but never do I want to feel the baby come out.  EVER.  So I filled out my paperwork and waited on the anesthesiologist to come in.  I was so happy to see him because I was in a good bit of pain.  I hugged Judd and they told me to “be still” which was almost laughable.  I felt the stick and propped back up in bed.  After the epidural, we just kind of sat around for a couple of minutes soaking in what was happening.  We had called family, but obviously none of them would make it in time!  A few minutes later the nurse said, “I’m going to check you and see where you are.”  So she came over and sat down and barely did anything.  Then she got up and just walked out without saying a word.  I looked at Judd and said, “Did she check me?”  “Yeah” he said.  I said, “No she didn’t.  I didn’t feel anything….hmm…I feel like I might need to push.”  Judd got up to tell someone and they met him at the door.  A crew of people were already coming in!  Judd looked down and said, “Whoa…her head is right there!”  Apparently there was no need to check me, she was crowning! (Thank you, epidural!) So we got set up and and my nurse said, “Okay on this next contraction we can push” and my doctor said, “You can push whenever you want, she’s coming out regardless!”  Three intense pushes later, Amelia was born at 8:11am.  We didn’t get to the hospital until 6:30am!  I couldn’t believe she was here!  Judd cut the cord, and she let out a big cry!  When she cried, I cried!  I was never so happy to hear a newborn scream her head off.  Her lungs were working perfectly and she was as healthy as possible!  She weighed 6lb 8.4oz, that’s just one ounce shy of Caroline’s birth weight at 37 weeks!  She made it just in time for Christmas!  The Lord has blessed our family with more than we deserve!
