So, our original plan was to do a walnut gel stain on our kitchen cabinets. That's now a no-go. The varnish has been on these kitchen cabinets for 50-something years and is pretty much staying. The gel stain won't hold to the varnish. I'm a little bummed. So now I need opinions. I'm open to all suggestions. The walls are going to be a soft tan with stainless steel appliances and hardware. The kitchen sink is white. Trim will also be white. Floors are a dark hardwood laminate. Countertops are granite tile with a "toothpick" grout. (Very small grout line!) A picture of the granite tile is below the cabinet pictures. So - what do you think? Any suggestions? I'm kind of at a loss!
(Granite countertop color...this is already ordered and cannot be changed.)

what if you painted the walls a color and the cabinets white?
ReplyDeleteor keep the walls tan and do the cabinets an accent color??
check out this post: all the rooms are gorgeous!

Brittany - The kitchen is connected to the living room, dining room, and hallways. I was trying to keep the paint color neutral so I could decorate easier but it still flow from room to room. The walls are Sherwin Williams "Softer Tan".
ReplyDeleteI'm not afraid of color by any means. My living room now is a bright yellow! Ha! I just want the rooms to flow easily. However, I would SO nervous to paint my kitchen cabinets a bright color! I do love the white cabinets in those pictures! Would white be too "blah"? I'm a little nervous about how dirty they might get with little grubby hands touching them all the time!
I painted mine antique white from sherwin williams and love them my island is black. I haven't had a fingerprint problem yet but we also don't have kids yet. I like neutral walls but after our first house which was entirely tan and the all white apartment I couldn't take it anymore so every room in our house now is a color. The apartment had white walls, carpet, countertops & cabinets! Even though my kitchen has bright walls I haven't had any trouble decorating it. It's all flowed pretty well. Whatever you pick will look great just like your house now.
ReplyDeleteI have always loved white cabinets!
ReplyDeleteMy vote is for black cabinets! My husband painted our white and I am now dreaming of black cabs:) White shows a lot of dirt with or without kiddos.
ReplyDeleteMy sister has done black cabinets in both of her houses. They look really sharp and go great with stainless steel appliances. She has a khaki on her kitchen walls with white trim and a similar granite to the one y'all picked. This time around, the painter added a metallic "rub" to the edges to antique them (they look distressed when you stand back). They look really, really nice!
Shannon - do you happen to have pictures? I was thinking about black or white and truly cannot make up my mind!!
ReplyDeleteI really like black best. I was thinking you need to add something to them though, and Shannon's idea may be what I'm thinking of!
ReplyDeleteI say you add some trim moulding on the door fronts ( we did this in our first house and I have pics somewhere on my blog) and then do them white with a brown glaze.
ReplyDeleteThe antiquing on the cabinets would be a great idea. I have something similar on the vanity cabinets in my bathroom if you want to come look at them. Another idea is to do a "crackled" paint. I did that on my kitchen island cabinets and I love the way it looks!
ReplyDeleteblack will look great. i love our black island! it painted so easily & looks fab.
